Mellby Narrow (Daniel Wäjersten) has won the Svenskt Travderby 2026 in a race record time of 1:11.5 over the classic distance of 2,640 meters autostart at Jägersro. The four-year-old stallion, a full brother to millionaire Mellby Jinx, was steered to victory by Magnus A Djuse, who claimed his maiden Derby victory. Rewarded with three million kronor in prize money, the triumph went down as one of the biggest surprises in recent Derby history.

The drama started even before the off. During the first start attempt, driver Adrian Kolgjini was thrown out of the sulky behind Ejnar Face. Kolgjini was widely praised for his quick reflexes, preventing the horse from getting loose and averting a potentially catastrophic accident, for which he was honored by Svensk Travsport. Following a roughly ten-minute delay, the field finally got underway.

In the running, Johan Untersteiner took control behind Golden Kronos (Daniel Wäjersten). Heavy favorite Zarex, also trained by Wäjersten and piloted by the trainer himself, was unable to make an impression. Out wide, Örjan Kihlström launched an assault with Wise Guy (Daniel Redén), and around Jägersro's far turn, it briefly looked as though the maestro Kihlström was destined for victory.

Turning into the homestretch, Wise Guy seemed primed to seal the win, but disaster struck as he jumped into a break just strides from the wire. "It left a bitter taste," Kihlström said afterward. "Magnus came with a head of steam and I tried to summon another gear, but that's when he made a break." Instead, it was Mellby Narrow, who had bided his time from behind, that unleashed a blistering burst in the lane to snatch the spoils.

Golden Kronos (Johan Untersteiner) kept going for second. Third place went to Carros First King, driven by Björn Goop and prepared by amateur trainer Angelica Jonsson. Trainer Daniel Wäjersten lined up four runners in the final and could barely fight back the tears afterward. "This is huge, it's quite overwhelming right now," he said, choked with emotion.

For Magnus A Djuse, it marked the pinnacle of his career so far. "I'm bubbling inside. Everything just fell into place. The trip worked out to perfection," he told the broadcast team. "This is my greatest victory. I've never won one of the truly big classics in Sweden before, so this tops it all." With this milestone victory, the Mellby Gård AB-owned stallion improved his record to five wins from 23 starts, rewriting the race record with his 1:11.5 clocking over 2,640 meters.
