Lazy Dust leads favorite-heavy field in the Dansk Trav Derby at Charlottenlund

Today, Charlottenlund Travbane in Copenhagen takes center stage for the J. Jensen Dansk Trav Derby, Denmark's premier harness race. Twelve 4-year-old trotters will face the starter over 3,000 meters behind the mobile gate on the historic 950-meter track, competing for the title that has been awarded since 1898. The first race of the day is scheduled for 1:35 PM.

The role of favorite belongs to Lazy Dust (Peter and Johan Untersteiner), who won his qualifier convincingly in 1:12.9a over 2,500 meters after a wide move to the front. The stallion, trained by the father-son Untersteiner duo in Halmstad, finished second in the Dansk Kriterium behind Lust for Life last year and has shown an upward trajectory in his last four starts. While Peter Untersteiner has won the Dansk Kriterium three times, the Derby trophy has so far eluded him. His best result was a second-place finish with Pure Vacation in 2011. With Lazy Dust starting from post five, the Swedish team has their best chance yet. Peter Untersteiner will take the lines himself.

The primary rival is Lust for Life (Paul Hagoort), last year’s dominant force in the crop with a victory in the Dansk Kriterium. However, the mare, prepared by Dutch trainer Paul Hagoort, failed to place in her qualifier and was assigned the disadvantageous post twelve, making her an outsider despite her undeniable class. Hagoort, operating from the Netherlands, knows the European circuit well and can rely on a horse that has previously dominated this generation.

Look Like Gaagaa (Kristian Malmin) is another serious contender. Trained by Norway’s Malmin, the stallion has won seven of his nine starts and starts from post three. The combination of speed and a favorable starting position makes him a dangerous player in the field. Malmin will be in the sulky himself.

Lurking in the background is 71-year-old Steen Juul, who has won the Dansk Trav Derby ten times, most recently in 2025. The Danish legend is once again represented in the field. Lonesomerider (Peter Rudbeck) won his trial in 1:13.8a/2500m and starts from post two with Jan Dahlgaard driving. Rudbeck himself is a former Derby-winning trainer and knows the Charlottenlund circuit better than anyone.

Lee Marvin (Jan Friis) will be driven by Birger Jørgensen, a two-time Derby winner. The stallion qualified in 1:14.3a/2500m. Lucky Mom, who won his heat in 1:13.3a/2500m under Magnus A Djuse, is considered an outsider with potential. Jeppe Juel's Luigi, at odds of 30.00 in early markets, rounds out the field of contenders.

Today's Derby coincides with the fiftieth anniversary of Tarok's legendary victory in 1976, a moment that still resonates in Danish trotting history. Today’s winner will join a tradition dating back to 1898, when Clara Greenländer won the inaugural edition. With favorites trained in Sweden, the Netherlands, and Norway, the 2026 edition once again highlights the international character of what was once a local breeding event.
