Command Center reigns at The Red Mile: Melander trainee confirms top status in Kentucky Championship Series

The historic red clay of The Red Mile in Lexington provided the backdrop for a power display by Command Center on Wednesday. In the second division of the Kentucky Championship Series for two-year-old colts and geldings, the son of Tactical Landing showed why he is considered among the elite of his crop. Under a poised drive from Scott Zeron, the colt displayed a maturity rare for his age.

Zeron took no chances after the gate opened, sending Command Center straight to the front. After an opening quarter in 28.1, the pair took control of the race, dictating the tempo without ever facing serious pressure. In the final turn, Zeron gave his charge a slight nudge, and Command Center pulled away from the chasers with an impressive burst of speed.

The clock stopped at a sharp 1:54.1, which translates to a kilometer rate of 1:10.9. Behind the winner, the other favorites battled for the minor placings. Meshuggah, driven by Åke Svanstedt, secured second after a strong closing kick, while Super Chapter with Dexter Dunn in the sulky completed the top three.

Trainer Marcus Melander was extremely pleased with his trainee's performance. He noted that Command Center possesses the ideal combination of natural speed and a cool-headed temperament, traits crucial for the major events later this fall. This was the fifth straight win for the Melander stable during this meet, a stat that underlines the Swede's current dominance on American soil.

With this convincing victory, focus now shifts to the upcoming Kentucky Sire Stakes finals. Given the ease with which Command Center distributed his energy, he seems more than ready for the tough battles awaiting in October's classics.
